Rachel Clara Stubbs Pet and Wildlife Artist

About The Artist

When Rachel was a child, she first aspired to be a horse when she grew up, setting up jumps and obstacle courses around her garden using brooms and garden furniture and pretending she was a show jumping horse. But since becoming an actual horse was off the cards for Rachel, she focused her passion on drawing them instead. Rachel has been a keen artist since a very young age. It is often mentioned by her dear grandma Babs, that she would often sit with her for hours on end drawing horses as a child of 5 or 6 years old. Drawing horses and other animals was a strong theme right the way through her childhood.

After studying Fine Art at Rawlins Academy college, Rachel left her hometown of Rothley - a small village in Leicester - and moved to the South West coast of Somerset to learn the art of sand sculpture. This gave her the skillset to create large scale 3D work with a great amount of detail. Rachel, was the Resident Carver at The Weston Sand Sculpture Festival from 2010 – 2015. This wasn’t the only place that Rachel sculpted in sand though, as a professional Sand Sculptor, she travelled all around the world – from many parts of Europe to as far as Taiwan and Kuwait and also the USA – sculpting in exhibits, festivals, competitions and becoming an award winning Sand Sculptor.

When Rachel wasn’t travelling she was in her studio at home, building her pet and wildlife portfolio. This became Rachel’s full time profession in 2019, when she got married and decided that being at home and starting a family was preferable to travelling the world for over 6 months of the year. Now living in Devon with her family consisting of her wife and their baby boy, their dog Mabel and their two cats Harry and Max, her current work focuses on realism and detail whilst trying to capture emotion, character and atmosphere.

I specialise in Horses and Dogs but also am happy to create any type of pet into a bespoke portrait. I also take inspiration from the environment around me and create original pieces inspired by British Wildlife.

Rachel's work is totally amazing. I don't know how she gets her subjects to look so life-like! Her pastel of my dog Scout could be mistaken for a photograph at a distance; it's only close-up you can see the strokes. I also have an Alvaro print, and the backlighting accentuates the horse's mane and tail movement. Both pieces draw high praise from visitors. Her work is truly extraordinary, you won't find a better pet artist x

Really don’t know what to say..... amazing, fantastic, brilliant are words that just don’t come close to Rachel’s talent. We’ve just received our portrait of our 2 Labradors and we couldn’t be happier with it, Rachel has captured every detail and we absolutely love it .........if you’re thinking of having a portrait you certainly won’t be disappointed with Rachel’s work.

I ordered a Christmas present for my husband. A little portrait of our cat Charlie. He loved it, we both do!

The detail and likeness is amazing, everyone comments on it.

Also in terms of the ordering process, Rachel is great, she asked questions about what I would like, she answered all questions really quickly and involved me in the entire thing. I couldn’t recommend her enough!
