This intimate study of two Emperor Moths was created as the foundation for a much larger painting, allowing me to explore their remarkable markings, rich colour palette and delicate forms in detail before scaling up the composition.

The Emperor Moth is one of Britain’s most striking native moths. Their intricate eye spots and soft, feathered antennae have long fascinated me, and I wanted to capture both their quiet beauty and the subtle differences between the larger female and the smaller, more vibrantly coloured male. Set against a softly textured background, the pair appear suspended in a moment of stillness, inviting the viewer to appreciate the extraordinary detail often overlooked in these elusive nocturnal insects.

Painted in oils on panel, this original artwork celebrates the elegance of one of our most beautiful native species. While it began as a technical study, it has become a finished piece in its own right—a small, refined painting that reflects my love of the natural world and the importance of slowing down to truly observe it.
